The day before you head off on holiday is usually packed with last minute tasks and wrapping up projects so you can relax while you’re gone. Wrangling your inbox is the last thing you want to do, so set your out of office message to kick in the day before you leave so you can power through those last minute tasks.

If you don’t want to confuse colleagues with a standard out of office message when they can clearly see you at your desk, set up a variation that mentions you’ll be leaving for a holiday at the end of the day and are focused on wrapping things up so you may not be able to respond until you’re back. You’ll set people’s expectations about response time and be able to handle only urgent emails, leaving you plenty of time to tackle anything that needs to get done before you go.

Not sure I could get away with the day before but I do always set mine for mid afternoon on the day I’m leaving.
