How To Make The Right Career Choice

It’s hard to imagine a time in history filled with more opportunity to find a unique and truly interesting career. But what if you’re so wrapped up in the endless possibilities that you keep switching jobs? Or worse, are paralysed by indecision? Don’t worry, finding (or changing to) the right career path is easier than you think. Here’s what to do.

#1 Discover yourself

There may be thousands of opportunities out there, but how many are really appropriate for you? Studies have found humans are traditionally bad at predicting the things that make them happy. Conversely, there’s also no point in choosing something you’re great at – but which brings you no joy. The trick is to find a happy medium where your skills, values and talents overlap with your likes and passions, and use that as your focus.

#2 Choose your lifestyle

Selecting your career is often about choosing a way of life. Some roles involve long hours and lots of travel, while others boast flexible work hours, or the ability to work from home. Consider what sacrifices you’re willing to make to perfect your own work/life balance.

#3 Look for outside inspiration

Jobs are emerging all the time, so why not visit a career expo, or a career guidance counsellor, to get a handle on the wealth of new possibilities? You could also try tapping into your network and asking others to suggest the roles they think would work best for you. Who knows – either could take you in directions you never dreamed possible.

#4 Try before you buy

Another option is to consider dipping your toe into career change by putting your hand up for an inter-departmental secondment. Requesting a ride-along, or work experience, can also open up new paths.

#5 Be open to new opportunities

It’s never too late to change career paths if you’re truly unhappy with your working life. Very few people remain in the same job for their whole career, so don’t be afraid to try new things and move on if the fit isn’t quite right. Worried about the effect on your resume? A professional can easily make an inability to settle seem like a deliberate choice to build valuable skills and experience.

#6 The grass isn’t always greener

Sometimes the secret to finding a fulfilling career is to change your perspective. A career that appears glamourous on the outside, may be on the whole rather mundane, and vice versa. By learning to appreciate the positives in any role you may find satisfaction closer than you think.

Don’t forget:

  • Know yourself
  • Combine your talents with your passions
  • Choose your lifestyle
  • It’s never too late to change career paths
