Eye-Fi Reverses Decision, Won’t Brick Older Devices

Last month, Wi-Fi enabled SD card maker Eye-Fi announced that it was dropping support for older devices. Good news though, they have decided to make one last bit of software for those older cards so they will continue to work.

Eye-Fi will make a new utility for the X2 and prior generation of products to allow for automatic downloading from your camera to your Mac. The release is a little odd though, here’s what Eye-Fi has to say about it:

X2U will be a one-time release provided to enabled continued use of an EOL impacted card for desktop transfer only on a transitional basis. The utility will not have the full capabilities of Eye-Fi Center and/or Eye-Fi View. ALL other Eye-Fi provided software will have to be uninstalled prior to installing the X2U on a supported device. The company will provided X2U documentation and knowledge base but no help desk support, no warranty and restrictive terms of service.

Still, while it looks like it won’t be fully-functional, it’s better than nothing. It sounds like they’re still looking into a Windows solution, but at least Mac users can download the new utility right now from here. Head over to Eye-Fi’s site for more info.
