There’s no doubt that Pokemon GO is getting millions of people to get moving more, but is just playing it enough to start losing weight? Turns out you’d have to play a lot to start seeing any real results.
In this video from the PictureFit YouTube channel, you’ll get a better idea of how many calories you’ll actually burn chasing that damn Pikachu silhouette. While playing, you’ll burn roughly 260kj/km. But let’s put this into terms anyone who plays Pokemon GO will understand: Eggs. In the game, you hatch Pokemon from eggs you collect at PokeStops, then walk (or run) certain distances to hatch them. So, hatching a 2km egg burns around 500kj (and that’s a generous estimate). That means you’d need to hatch over 30 2km eggs in order to lose just one kilogram.
Not to mention, all the stopping to catch Pokemon and collect items at PokeStops slows the whole process down. Because of that, a regular, phone-free walk around the park or office is better for you in the long run. But make no mistake, Pokemon GO is still a positive influence that provides great motivation to those who weren’t doing any walking at all. And some walking is most certainly better than no walking. If you’re looking to use Pokemon GO as a weight loss tool, however, you might need to kick things up a notch.
