Microsoft is racing to get even more PCs on Windows 10 and is now offering to help people upgrade their existing computers onto the operating system at the Microsoft Store in Sydney. That’s not really a big deal in itself but the store will give you a free Dell laptop for free if the staff can’t do a same-day upgrade on your eligible PC by close of business. Time to rally up your friends and head down to the Microsoft Store with your old PCs in tow. Here’s what you need to know.
Windows 10 is a free upgrade for people who are already running Windows 7 or 8 but that offer ends on July 29. In a last ditch effort to bolster the number of Windows 10 adopters, the vendor is serving up the following deals through its flagship Microsoft Store in Sydney:
- If you rock up to the store before 12pm with a PC that is eligible for a Windows 10 upgrade, then the staff will do it all for you. However, if you’re still not upgrade by the time the store closes on the day of your visit, you’ll get a free Dell Inspiron 15 5000. There’s only a limited supply of free laptops so you might want to jump on this quickly.
- When you upgrade to Windows 10, you’ll get 50 per cent off on Office 365 Home or Personal.
- If you show up with a PC that is not eligible for a free Windows 10 upgrade (maybe it’s running an ancient Windows OS or doesn’t meet the hardware specifications), then you will be offered a 15 per cent discount on any new device purchase in the Microsoft Store.
If you’re based in Sydney and have a ton of friends, you can probably game the system by showing up all together and just overwhelming the Microsoft Store. You do need to drop your devices off by 12pm to be eligible. If your group is big enough, they can’t possibly get through all of you with the Windows 10 upgrade, which increases your chances of getting one or even multiple free laptops all together.
Microsoft hasn’t specified just how many Dell laptops are up for grabs but it’s still worth trying your luck if you haven’t had a chance to upgrade to Windows 10.
The offer ends on July 29. Microsoft Store is located at Westfield Sydney, 188 Pitt St, Sydney NSW 2000.

what if i come 10 minutes before store close?
Id be more worried about it installing, but having issues later down the line. I havent upgraded to 10 yet cause when I tried 8 on my PC, it wouldnt sleep/hibernate properly
So the one in Sydney is the only one in Australia?
Thanks, Microsoft.
It’s the only store outside of North America; this isn’t a slight against any city.
I took microsoft up on this challenge and gave them my Ausu UL80VT laptop to upgrade. What they did was pretty bad. They installed w10 and called me to inform me that they were successful in installing w10 on my laptop but there is a “little” problem with my graphics card. Turns out that they cannot get my GPU working properly and in some cases it will break down. Then I thought that I would soon own the Dell 15 that they offer when they are unable to give a working machine back to me by the end of the day but no. Because they were able to give me back my laptop without a working graphics card they claim that They were able to install w10 and I only get 15% off in the store rather than a new laptop. I’m a bit dissapointed but I don’t know what I was expecting from a profit driven corporation.
But the machine was able to be upgraded, right? If that machine doesn’t support Windows 10 then of course you’ll only get the 15% off.
