Leather jackets are cool. They always have been and they always will be. Here are three tips to help you pick the perfect one for you.

Real leather jackets are expensive, so it’s important it fits nicely and is of quality build. In this video from the Real Men Real Style YouTube channel, Antonio Centeno explains a few things you should look for in a nice leather jacket:

1. High-cut armholes: The armholes of the jacket should be as high as you can stand them. This gives you the most freedom of movement for your shoulders and arms. Lower-quality jackets will have wide, low-cut armholes.
2. Mind the jacket’s silhouette: Just because a jacket fits you doesn’t mean it makes you look good. Make sure the shape of your jacket broadens your shoulders, slims your waist, makes your arms look proportional, and generally enhance your natural look.
3. Know your leather: If you know the differences between leathers, you’ll have an easier time picking the right jacket that fits in your price range. Cow leather is the cheapest and most common, but lamb leather is much softer and costs a little more. There are also three major cuts of leather (from lowest to highest quality): genuine, top grain, and full grain. It’s also important to know that country of origin doesn’t necessarily change the quality of the jacket.

While these tips are geared toward men in the video, the same tips apply when buying a women’s leather jacket. Even the cheap leather jackets out there are kind of expensive, so make sure you do your research before buying one.
