Stop Trying To Exclusively Date Your Type

Stop Trying To Exclusively Date Your Type

Everyone has preferences when it comes to dating, but only dating people that are your “type” can actually sabotage your romantic life in the long run. Dating outside of your comfort zone can help you make better dating choices in the future.

Dating people with the same shared qualities over and over again might feel comfortable, but you’ll probably keep ending up with the same problems too. In this video from the TechInsider YouTube channel, dating expert Andrea Syrtash, author of He’s Just Not Your Type (And That’s a Good Thing): How to Find Love Where You Least Expect It, suggests you figure out your “type” and intentionally try dating someone who doesn’t line up with it.

If you’re not sure what your “type” is, Syrtash recommends this simple exercise:

Consider if your dating life were a movie, what would it be called? How would it begin and end? And what character do you always play? You’ll start to find some themes, and that determines what your type is…

Once you know your “type,” intentionally look for someone that doesn’t fit that mould. If you usually go for extroverts, try dating an introvert. If you usually go for the artistic and free-spirited, try dating someone who is logical and conservative.

Not only will that change give you an opportunity to learn more about your relationship preferences, you might see that your usual “type” doesn’t let you be the version of yourself you want to be. You might never want to date your “type” ever again.
