Sleep In Light (Or No) Clothes For Deeper, Better Sleep

When you go to sleep, your body starts to cool down as it settles in for some rest. The easier it is to do so, the better you’ll sleep. Help your body along with minimal, light clothing.

As news organisation Mic says on its Science site, sleeping in light, loose fighting clothes — or going the full monty and sleeping naked — isn’t just comfortable. It helps your body regulate its temperature to get better sleep. You don’t need to spend as much energy sleeping as you do during the day, so your body can lower its core temperature to save energy. Getting to a lower core temperature can help you get into a deeper sleep.

Health-wise, it’s important to let your body cool down during sleep, Stevenson said. Cooling down will lower your blood pressure, which in turn helps your body activate its “rest and digest system” — otherwise known as the parasympathetic nervous system. Cooling down also helps the body release certain hormones and reparative enzymes, he said.

That being said, everyone has their own personal preferences. If you’ve slept well in big, heavy pajamas your whole life, sleeping naked could make you more uncomfortable. The anxiety would keep you awake and cancel out any health benefits. However, if you’re comfortable with making small adjustments, or you need to try something to get better sleep, the clothes you wear could make a differences.
