You’ve got your Raspberry Pi ready to go, but you want it to run it without having a keyboard or mouse (or perhaps even a screen) attached. In order to interact with it, you’ll need to connect to it remotely and one way to accomplish that is with a Virtual Network Computing (VNC) server / client setup.
As MatthewH points out in his Instructables guide, it doesn’t take much to remote into your Raspberry Pi from the command line. Which is great if you just need to do some admin tasks, but less good if you need a proper desktop to work with.
Fortunately, the solution is simple. From the Pi, you’ll need to install and configure x11vnc, a VNC server that will allow remote connections with graphical support. Setting it up requires little more than selecting a password and starting the server.
Once that’s done (and you have the Raspberry Pi’s IP address), you can connect to it using your favourite VNC client — TightVNC, UltraVNC or even something entirely different.
