Hound, The Super-Fast Natural Language Virtual Assistant, Is Finally Out Of Beta

Android/iOS: Hound is fast — really fast — and while your phone probably already comes with its own virtual assistant, Hound integrates with services like Uber and Yelp. The team behind it hopes more will follow, for a truly cross-platform assistant that does the same work for you on any device.

The last time we looked at Hound, it was just a demo that showed off how speedy it was at doing calculations and pulling up basic information and trivia. It’s still that speedy, but SoundHound (who you’ll know as the song-identifying app that’s not Shazam) is opening Hound’s API so other companies and services can integrate with it. You can already look up restaurants by name and check their menus and reviews, and you can already get Uber fare estimates, request a ride, or specify what type of Uber vehicle you’d like, all using your voice, in plain language.

Hound can also handle complex and compound queries and listen for follow-up questions without you having to press a button again. Like we mentioned the last time we looked at it, it might not replace Google Now or Siri if you use one of those all the time, but if you switch between devices, or want something more consistent, it’s worth keeping on your phone for those times you need to find out something like “How many people live in Tokyo and what’s the average population density per square metre?” Hit the link below to try it out.
