This week, Brother launched a new range of laser printers and multi-function centres (MFCs) tailor-made for small to medium-sized businesses. The redesigned models boast a smaller footprint, faster print speeds of up to 50 pages per minute (ppm) and a 1000-5000 page slot. They also have a modular, scalable design, allowing companies to build on existing units as their business grows. We take a look at the best small business models, which start at $299.
Brother’s new L5000 and L6000 Series printers (sexy name, no?) have been designed for busy offices, healthcare environments and retail spaces with an emphasis on faster performance and lower operational costs. Productivity improvements over the previous range include 600% higher maximum output capacity, 150% higher input capacity, a 66% higher toner yield and thicker steel-reinforced frames.
If you run a networked environment of between five and 20 users, the $329 HL-L5200DW should have everything you need. Noteworthy features include a 40ppm print speed, a 250 input/150 output paper capacity, 256MB of inbuilt RAM, a choice of 250-sheet trays or 520-sheet trays and wireless network connectivity. (There’s also a wired network version for $299.) As befits a business printer, it features enterprise level security tools such as Secure Function Lock (SFL) 3.0, Internet Protocol Security (IPSec), Print Archive, Secure Reset and Certificate Management.
On the MFC side, there’s the Brother MFC-L6700DW, which will set you back $1099. It boasts 46ppm print speeds, a two-sided (duplex) scanner and USB host, 512MB of inbuilt memory, 520 input/150 output paper capacity, a super high yield toner at up to 12,000 pages, a 70-page dual CIS automatic document feeder, a 12.3cm touchscreen and configuration options for different media sizes.
Both models support Google Cloud Print 2.0, along with other printing solutions such as AirPrintTM and Mopria. You can also print directly from apps including Dropbox, Google Drive, Box and Onedrive. The MFC-L6700DW can also send scanned documents directly to a range of cloud services; from Evernote to SharePoint.
In a bid to speed up employees’ learning curves, the new models sport a touchscreen interface that mimic the look and feel of smartphones. There’s also an inbuilt troubleshooter so flummoxed Michael Bolton types don’t have to scour Google for a solution — or murder their machines.
