Video: Concrete countertops are strong and durable, and you can make your own without needing to create or haul giant blocks of concrete. This video shows an outdoor project, but you can also upgrade your kitchen countertops with the same technique.
Mike Montgomery of Modern Builds demonstrates the skim coat technique in the video above. Here, he’s using a solid core wood door and covering it with several (five) layers of feather finish concrete. You’ll learn several tips from the video, including sanding the door first to grab the concrete, filling in trowel mark mistakes with concrete and how to get a smooth versus a more rustic finish. There are text directions in the link below.
This is for an outdoor kitchen, and he uses a finish that isn’t food safe (don’t eat off of the counter or cut food directly on it). For indoor use, look for a food-safe sealer.
While this project takes time and doesn’t give you the complete durability of slabs of concrete, you can skim-coat overlay your counters in place.
