The site essentially aggregates open Slack teams. Create an account on Hamster Pad, click on a chat and you’ll get an email invite to join the Slack team. The tags for each chat help you figure out if it fits your interests, but currently there’s no search or other way of filtering the communities list.
As of this writing, there are several Slack teams dedicated to programming and particular programming languages, but there are also teams for general topics such as music, travel, and Star Wars.
