Why Finding The Right Gym Culture Makes You Stick To Your Workouts

Your gym culture can often make or break your fitness experience, so it’s important that you go to one that suits you. There’s a reason CrossFit appeals to so many fitness first-timers and veterans alike: It’s more of a community than it is a place where you splash around in a puddle of your own sweat.

Just because you were put off by one gym, doesn’t mean you should give up on all gyms. There are myriad options beyond your commercial high-price, machine-laden Globo gym. You’ve got CrossFit studios, grungy and garage-like gyms, parkour gyms, boxing gyms, yoga studios and many more. Each is like a different country, with its own social norms, languages, rules and attitudes. (Actually, this hilarious video parodies gym culture quite well.) How do you learn a gym’s culture? Ben Johnson sums it up nicely:

Gym culture is the feel of the room: walk through the door and you’re fired up to train. It motivates you to push that much harder, and it leaves you excited to come back the next day. It keeps you hungry for progress and inspired to unlock your full potential.

Your ideal gym should make you feel welcome, yet push you to be your best. It should make you excited to keep going back and keep working out, and inspired to keep moving toward your goals. In some ways, you can think of whether the gym fits your personality and priorities.

Are you of singular focus and determination? You might prefer a place like Gold’s Gym. Are you more carefree and prefer a relaxed environment? Try Planet Fitness. Are you a community person? You might feel at home in a CrossFit box.

It’s also OK to switch up gyms as your fitness level and goals shift. It’s like outgrowing a pair of your favourite shoes: They did their duty to get you places, but it’s time to shed a tear, say goodbye and move on to something that’s nicer and fits better (and probably less smelly).
