The Beginner DIY Skills That Pay Off Most

When it comes to saving money, some DIY projects aren’t worth the time and effort. You have to weigh the difficulty of the project with the cost of hiring a professional. Money savvy couple Mike and Lauren share the DIY skills that pay off most.

In the video, Mike and Lauren “find the overlap between the highest paid trades and DIY projects that have the lowest barrier of entry”. Here are the top three on their list:

Paint: “Anybody can paint a room. It just takes more patience than experience…they say that paint is 90 per cent prep work.”

Unclog a drain: “Skip the draino, buy a plumbing snake, and save yourself a fortune.”

Basic car maintenance: “Mechanics charge 90 dollars an hour, but that’s just for repairs. If you’re going in for an oil change, they’re going to tack on little fees here and there…”

Of course, this can be subjective. Painting an entire room might not be worth your time, depending on how much free time you have and how much you earn. But Mike and Lauren offer a solid idea of which DIY skills pay off most in general. They explain each skill in detail and offer a few more, so check out the video in full.
