Google Play Games Is The Latest Casualty In The Great Google+ Divorce

Remember when Google+ came out and at first it was kinda cool, but then Google shoved it in places it didn’t belong? Well, Google started backing down. The next step is Android games, which should mercifully become less integrated with Google+.

As Android Police explains, many Android games already use the Google Play Games service, which is tied to your Google account, to log achievements and save games across devices. However, this permission weirdly came bundled with a request to make your game activity visible to “Anyone on the web”. You could manually change this setting to “Only you”, but why is logging into a game tied to a social media profile by default anyway?

In an upcoming change to the way Google Play Games works, signing into Google+ will remain an option, but it won’t come mandatory. Game developers can choose whether to implement that specific request on their own. And, furthermore, you can disable the request entirely in the setting of the Play Games app. It’s a step in the right direction for a social network that really didn’t need to be everywhere at once.
