Focus On Connection, Not Consumption, To Keep Date Night Inexpensive

Every couple needs a date night every once in a while. If you’re short on funds (or just like to be frugal) date ideas can be hard. To help, focus on the connection between both partners, rather than the activity itself.

As personal finance blog Pretend to Be Poor explains, we can easily lose the point of date night to the idea of what we think date nights are supposed to be. Going to the movies, having an expensive dinner, or taking a trip are all fun, but they’re not necessary for a date. Sometimes a date can be as simple as setting aside a night to cook dinner together and watch Netflix:

Dating is about connection, not consumption. Once you have kids you need somewhere to go connect. It’s about conversation, which is universally tied to sharing a meal. It’s about common experience; do something outside your routine. It doesn’t have to be sky-diving or horseback riding, but it probably shouldn’t be grocery shopping, either.

Focusing on how you’ll connect with your partner is also a helpful way to come up with new date ideas. Rather than going on a type of date because you saw it in a movie, you can tailor the activities to your shared interest. The more you’re focused on the things that bring you together, the more likely you are to have a great date, regardless of how much it costs.
