Google Wallet Gets New, Simpler App, Likely Preparing For Android Pay

Android: If you’re a Google Wallet user (possible, if you’ve ever paid for something with Google Play), your app experience is about to get a little weirder. Google has released a second Google Wallet app to the Play Store. Though it probably won’t stay this way for long.

Google Wallet’s new app — which is distinguished by a slightly different icon and the word “New” in the title — will likely replace the old Google Wallet app eventually. Instead of handling mobile payments like the old Google Wallet app did (and still does), this new version will only handle things like your Google Wallet balance and transaction history.

As we learned in May, Google is going to release Android Pay soon. Android Pay will presumably be the new home for paying with your phone (if you’re into that sort of thing). It may replace the old Google Wallet app, or it may have a third Play Store listing that we haven’t seen yet. We’ll know more once that drops. However, in the meantime, yes there are two Google Wallet apps on the Play Store. You can check out the new one below.
