Toast Pine Nuts In Your Microwave Using The Alton Brown Method

Toast Pine Nuts In Your Microwave Using The Alton Brown Method

Pine nuts are delicious, but expensive, which is why you don’t want to waste any by burning them while trying to toast them and bring out that nutty flavour. Celebrity chef Alton Brown has an easy solution: use your microwave to perfectly toast them instead.

You’ll need pine nuts (obviously), salt, and a small paper bag. Once you have those lined up, do this:

  1. Rinse ½ cup of pine nuts in water and drain them.
  2. Toss the pine nuts with 1 teaspoon of salt. Don’t worry, extra salt will be easy to brush off after toasting.
  3. Put the salted pine nuts in the paper bag, fold over the top, and microwave the bag on high for about a minute. Allow the pine nuts to sit for a minute before you taste them.

If you find them to be undercooked, keep zapping them in thirty second increments until they’re done. Then add them to your favourite pesto, on top of your favourite pasta dish, or in a salad for that boost of nutty flavour.
