Change The Trim On Recessed Lighting For A Cheap Upgrade

When you are ready to change the look of your recessed lighting, there is a cheaper and easier way to do it than replacing the entire fixture: Just swap out the trim.

Recessed lighting designs have changed a bit since the ’80s and ’90s, and it’s likely your lighting manufacturer has updated trim that can be easily swapped out for your dated and possibly “yellowed” trim.

Start by turning off the breaker and the light switch and removing the bulb. Then remove the socket which is often held in place with a wingnut. Once the socket is removed you can pull out the trim.

Look for a manufacturer and model name in metal housing. This can help guide you when seeking replacement trim. If there is no identifier to be found, bring your old trim into a lighting store and try to match it to something you like.
