You can use cabbage for more than just coleslaw — like cooking half a head in a pan for a crispy, hearty side dish. You can actually test cabbage’s “doneness” with a cake tester.
Once you think your cabbage head is done, poke the cake tester slowly into the leaves. If it slides easily through to the center, your cabbage is ready for serving. You can see this technique in the video above at about the 2:30 mark.

A cake tester is metel skewer some body foolishly paid $20 or more for.
Sauerkraut is a far superior solution for excess cabbage.
