Leaving Your Desk At Lunch Can Boost Your Creative Problem Solving

We’ve talked about how eating lunch at your desk could make you less productive, but there are other benefits to eating elsewhere. Eating away from your desk could free up some brain power and give you more “aha!” moments when you’re trying to solve a problem.

Kitty Boitnott at work blog CareerRealism explains that working with one hand and eating a sandwich with the other won’t help you find creative solutions to your problems:

Have you ever experienced the phenomenon of having some of your greatest ideas while in the shower? Do you think you are alone in that? You’re not. When you “free yourself up” as you do in the shower or while taking a break from your work, your brain is suddenly “free” to consider new, fresh ideas that can potentially solve the problems that were plaguing you while you were so vigorously pondering the issue. Letting your mind wander a bit over lunch can lead to new ideas and new inspiration.

A change of environment and thought process can dig your brain out of a rut. Use that time to move your thoughts away from work and you’ll return to your problem refreshed, perhaps with the perfect solution in hand. You don’t need to go out and eat if you don’t want to. Just dedicated the time to yourself, even if you work at home.
