ATO Small Business Assist

Yes, the Tax Office. No business can escape tax and regulatory obligations, but the Small Business Assist site makes it easy to hunt down the information you need, with an easy-to-use search interface pointing to ATO guides on specific topics and tools to help with business calculations. Even if you’re employing an accountant, it pays to double-check on important details.

Business.gov.au

A useful complement to the ATO site, the official Federal government business site offers advice on everything from starting a business to grants and training options available and what to do if you decide to sell or close your business. Especially handy: the roundup of business-related events sorted by region, so you can find useful events near you.

Flying Solo

Flying Solo is our pick of the many small business forums out there. While Flying Solo does have paid-for premium offerings (and pushes them quite hard), the forums themselves are free, open and helpful.

ABS

Data helps you make better business decisions — and for authoritative data on trends in Australia, the Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) remains the best source. The release advice page is especially useful for keeping track of upcoming data — note the dates information relevant to your business sector is released and jot them in your calendar.

Australian Small Business Commissioner

The Australian Small Business Commissioner acts as an advocate for small businesses at Federal level, and also provides advice to business owners. There are also state commissioners in NSW, Victoria, SA and WA linked to from the site. Useful as a resource for dispute resolution.
