Stop Looking For The Perfect ‘Soul Mate’ Job

Many of us look for our “perfect job” — the dream job that we could do for the rest of our lives. While this can help us narrow down the type of work we do, there may not actually be one job that is your career “soul mate”.

Barking Up the Wrong Tree suggests that there is no perfect job that only you are suited to do. There’s also no job that’s ready-made for your specific skillset. Most skills can be learned by most people. If you have a job that only fits 80% of your skillset or experience, but that you enjoy doing, that job is good enough to be your dream job:

There is no one perfect job you were meant to do.

There are many “yous” with many passions and many talents and therefore many jobs you could be fulfilled by.

Thinking about what you were “born to do” gets in the way because you’re waiting for some magic “click” and not busy developing skills.

We generally like it when everything lines up, but those moments where the stars align are, by definition, rare. It’s more likely that some jobs will be terrible for you, while others will be great. Focus on the ones that fit the most and then adapt yourself to make the fit even better.
