Replace Your Impulse To Spend With A More Productive Task

Spending temptations are everywhere. If you’re on a budget and you find yourself feeling spendy, distract yourself with a more productive task. Ready For Zero’s Claire Murdough suggests getting rid of junk next time you feel an impulse to spend.

Claire writes:

Instead of buying more stuff, take a few minutes to go through the stuff you already own… and get rid of it! Pare down the things that you no longer need or use. Go through the odd piles that have set up permanent residence in your closet and get rid of them. You can organise a yard sale if you have enough to make it worth your effort, or alternatively take it to a donation centre. Seeing how much stuff you’ve spent money on that you no longer want can be a great reality check.

I like this idea because you reroute your impulse and declutter your life in the process. Alternatively, if you’re feeling impulsive, you can tackle an item on what she calls your “Forever List”. (That would be the ongoing to-do list of things you never get around to doing.)
