Firemonkeys Hack Reminds Us To Patch, Patch, Patch

Over at Kotaku, my colleague Mark has the story of how EA-owned Australian games studio Firemonkeys shut down its forums after they were taken offline by a hacker.

The attack was apparently possible because the hacker took advantage of a known vulnerability in Vbulletin, software widely used for running online forums. While we don’t know all the specifics, there’s a clear reminder here: keep track of reported vulnerabilities in any software you deploy, and patch as soon as possible.
