Dell has upgraded its venerable PowerEdge server line to generation 13. The most notable change in this generation (latest Intel Xeon processors aside)? Hybrid models that let you combine flash and SATA drives in a single server.
The R730xd rack server can incorporate up to 28 individual drives, including up to 18 1.8in SSD drives. (Alternatively you could fill it with cheaper conventional hard drives and use it as an Exchange box, but that seems rather less sexy.)
Other tweaks to the line include built-in NFC for easier inventory and troubleshooting. Most of the range goes on sale immediately, though the M630 blade server won’t be on sale until December.
