Planning a road trip is rarely just about finding the fastest route between two points. You also have to consider stops for petrol, bathrooms, food or entertainment. Alongways is a Google Maps mashup that lets you type in your origin and destination, and search for anything you want along the way, from “pizza” to “dog parks” and everything in-between.
Whether you’re travelling with a pet and want to find parks along the route, want to find all the wineries or breweries along your route, or just want a few backup hotels in case your plans change, type in what you’re looking for in the search bar and watch the pinpoints fall on the map. (The autocomplete only seems to work for US addresses, but you can search for anywhere in the world, including Australia.)
Click any item on the map for more information, including contact information for the destination, local reviews and a link to the destination’s website. It’s a simple tool, but it’s useful for finding those little things along the way if you’re planning a trip without having to resort to Yelp or a Google Search after you’re already on the road. Hit the link below to give it a try.
