The Smouldering Mac Desktop

The Smouldering Mac Desktop

Ruurd’s desktop is a contrast of ice and fire. It’s loaded up with useful Geektool widgets to help him keep track of the weather and see what’s playing. Here’s how he put it all together.

We had actually talked to Ruurd a while back about this desktop, but his newer one is much more interesting, and he has shared all of the Geeklets and scripts you’d need to set it up. Here’s what you’ll need to give your Mac a similar look:

  • The Crater in the Sky wallpaper, by photographer Salvo Orlando
  • Bowtie, an embeddable desktop controller for the music display and iTunes controls
  • The GeekTool system monitor and configuration utility for OS X
  • These Geeklets for the arc-style system monitors (RAM/CPU/Disk) on the right side of the display, the calendar embedded on the desktop, the weather display and more.

You’ll need to unpack the file linked above and either drag/drop or import the geeklets and fonts into GeekTool to get everything to work. If you have trouble, head over and check out our guide to GeekTool for tips, or head over to Ruurd’s Flickr page to post a comment and ask him how he did it. Make sure to let him know how much you like his work while you’re there!
