Some vibrators do nothing but buzz. Fancier models may have different vibration patterns, but if you really want to experiment — and test out your programming chops — you can create your own vibration patterns with an Arduino.

Lifehacker veterans should be familiar with the Arduino: it’s a small microcontroller that’s really useful for electronics project. The Arduino is great for home automation and tweaking your gadgets — including, yes, vibrators.

For this project you’ll need a (good) vibrator, an Arduino, and the HackOff, a tiny board that connects the two together. It’s a pretty simple project. As we’ve said before, it’s really easy to get started with Arduino, especially if you have someone’s code to build from.
