Keeping a clean and tidy computer is a good idea — no one likes a crusty, speckled monitor or keyboards littered with so many crumbs the keys crunch when you press them. The folks at Apartment Therapy have a quick guide to cleaning your keyboard, mouse, and display in a minute every day.
Granted, when in this case “clean your computer” means the parts you interact with the most. Wiping your keyboard, mouse, and display clean of debris and residue doesn’t just encourage better health, it also makes your machine a bit nicer to work with. Here’s the suggested routine:
- Turn keyboard/ laptop upside down over the trash ~ 10s
- Wipe screen with the terry cloth side of the cleaning cloth ~ 15s
- Wipe screen with the microfibre side of the cleaning cloth ~ 15s
- Wipe down keyboard and trackpad (or mouse) with the cleaning wipes ~ 20s
That’s all there is to it. The cleaning cloth they suggest is a dual-sided microfibre cloth, one with a looser texture than the other. The whole thing only takes a minute (a little more if you’re particularly messy).
Of course, you’ll periodically need to do a deeper clean of your system, but this is a solid basic maintenance routine.

I don’t understand people who eat OVER their computer. Really? That’s just disgusting.
some people do not get a lunch break at work, do you understand?
Eating OVER ≠ Eating AT.
It’s possible to eat AT your desk and not be dripping hamburger sauce OVER your computer/keyboard which I hope is Darren’s point.
You’re also assuming this is limited to work. I know plenty of people who eat at computer desks, including myself.
