Surface RT: Australia Gets A Smaller Discount

In the US, Microsoft cut the price of the Surface RT by $150 over the weekend. In Australia, it looks like we’re not getting quite the same discount.

JB Hi-Fi is listing an $80 discount for the Touch Cover models (down from $578 to $498 for the 32GB model, or down to $608 from $688 for the 64GB), and a $71 discount from $459 to $388 for the basic 32GB Surface RT.

We haven’t seen an official announcement from Microsoft Australia yet; we’ll update this post with further details if we do. JB’s pricing is already slightly lower than the official list price. Update: Essentially the same prices are now on the official Microsoft Australia Surface store.

An $80 saving is welcome but not earth-shattering, and certainly not as good as the $99 price TechEd US attendees paid or the discounted price for school purchasers. Even allowing for the fact US buyers still need to pay tax, we’ve come out slightly behind on this one.
