  • Vodafone switched on its 4G network in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Newcastle and Wollongong today — although the service is currently only available on an invite-only basis. According to the telco, its 4G network has demonstrated trial speeds that are the fastest currently on offer in the Australian market of up to 100Mbps – “speeds not seen in all five mainland capitals on any other network in the country”.   • Volkswagen has decided to recall nearly 26,000 cars in Australia due to safety concerns surrounding direct shift gearboxes. The German automobile manufacturer is recalling 25,928 vehicles including the Polo, Golf, Golf Wagon, Golf Cabriolet, Jetta, Passat, and Caddy ranges. You can find out more over at Gizmodo.

  • A Queensland man has been fined $154 by police for belting down a residential street on a rocket-powered skateboard that he built himself. According to the ABC report, the 24-year old had strapped legal rockets to his skateboard with the aid of duct tape before blasting off down the street at seeds exceeding 60km/h.
