Private cloud implementations give you flexibility and security, but how can you ensure those essential business apps and data are backed up in case of emergency? System Center 2012’s Data Protection Manager feature is the easy solution.
The latest version of Data Protection Manager (DPM), which forms part of System Center 2012 SP1, includes numerous enhancements. You can back up all your servers — including virtual machines running on Hyper-V, Exchange Server, SQL Server and SharePoint — on a schedule that suits you, and as frequently as every 15 minutes if you wish.
The updated DPM has dramatically improved performance — up to 900 per cent when backing up Hyper-V VM images over cluster shared volumes. Backups can now be performed in parallel, with a default level of three backups which can be adjusted to meet your needs. DPM automatically tracks changes on a system and only backs up those elements that have changed, which means the CPU impact is minimal (typically well under 0.5 per cent).
If you take advantage of Hyper-V’s live migration options, DPM will continue to operate both during and after the migration. DPM works in concert with Virtual Machine Manager to ensure changes are efficiently tracked, and can handle up to 800 VMs of up to 100GB each. You can also backup directly to Windows Azure, giving you a high-reliability backup without the need to invest in new infrastructure.

so dpm is the new ntbackup? if you use dpm, does that mean you wont need any other backup software like backup exec/commvault/arcserve/etc? is it d2d only? can it do compression? de-dupe?
