Autorip Rips Movies As Soon As You Insert The Disc

Windows: Autorip is a utility that automates the process of ripping DVDs and Blu-rays. The software detects when you insert a movie and immediately starts the ripping process.

The app requires MakeMKV to be installed on your machine to rip the movies and optionally Handbrake if you want to compress them to a smaller file. Once you install Autorip, you’ll need to go through a quick, one-time setup process:

  1. Right-click Autorip in your system tray and click “Settings”.
  2. Select the source drive to watch (this is your DVD or Blu-ray drive).
  3. Select the target folder to place videos when they’ve finished encoding.
  4. Click the “Advanced” tab.
  5. Under “Location of MKV Directory” select the folder where you’ve installed MakeMKV. Do the same for Handbrake, if you’re using it.
  6. Insert a disc to start ripping.

If you want to compress the video when you’re done, uncheck the “Rip Only” box and set your Handbrake presets as well (we like High Profile with the MKV file format). You can choose to either have the app prompt you to enter the movie’s name manually as soon as a disc is inserted, or automatically detect the title’s name from the volume label.

Autorip will pull every video track off the disc and create an individual file for each. This is a great way to save all the special features or TV episodes if you want them, but they won’t have proper labels. If you don’t want to keep them, you’ll have to delete everything but the movie after you’re done. This is a little annoying, but as long as you have a big hard drive, it’s hard to beat the convenience.
