Luv-a-Duck Tarred-And-Feathered By ACCC

Poultry manufacturer Luv-a-Duck has come under fire from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for deceiving its customers. The company claimed that its ducks were reared on spacious outdoor farms, which turns out to be far from the truth.

In its various marketing materials, Luv-a-Duck asserted that its ducks are ‘grown and grain fed in the spacious Victorian Wimmera Wheatlands’ and are ‘range reared and grain fed’ — statements that the ACCC claims to be false.

“The duck meat products sold by Luv-a-Duck were in fact processed from ducks that did not have substantial access to the outdoors, or access to spacious outdoor conditions,” the ACCC said in a statement.

The company is now facing Federal Court, charged with false, misleading or deceptive conduct.

This isn’t the first time that a duck manufacturer has ruffled the ACCC’s feathers. In June last year, the consumer watchdog took Pepe’s Ducks to court for describing its produce as “open range”. In reality the ducks lived their entire lives inside indoor sheds.

“Consumers must be able to trust that what is on the label is true and accurate,” ACCC Commissioner Sarah Court said. “Businesses need to make sure they are not misleading consumers into paying a premium for products that don’t match the claims made on the label.”

Well, at least it’s not made from horse meat.
