Pocket Weather gets its data directly from the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, meaning that it’s more accurate and timely than most rivals. Add in hourly forecasts (ranging out to six days) and detailed knowledge of local suburbs, wrap it up in a straightforward card interface, and you have a much more functional weather source than the built-in iOS options.

The only real complaint we’ve ever heard about Pocket Weather is the price. $1.99 isn’t expensive, but some users were upset when last year’s new version didn’t offer a free upgrade for existing customers. Given the price and the feature set (and the need for developers to earn a crust), we can’t see that as a major complaint.

There are lots of weather apps on the iPhone that suit different needs. The other popular free apps — AccuWeather, The Weather Channel and Weather Underground — are good alternatives if you don’t want to pay for a locally-oriented version.

Lifehacker’s App Directory is a growing directory of recommendations for the best applications and tools in a number of given categories.
