Last night, Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, and with that, a slew of images hit social media. Unfortunately, a number of these images are fake, or simply not from Hurricane Sandy. The Atlantic has been sorting through them to differentiate between the real and the falsified.
Lots of fakes have been spotted by Is Twitter Wrong? and Snopes, but what makes The Atlantic’s coverage interesting is that it walks through the process of how the photos are revealed as fake or real. It’s a learning experience for anyone looking to spot fake images online.
Some of the fakes are revealed through Google’s reverse image search, others through detecting Photoshopped images, and a few by searching through time stamps. Head over to The Atlantic to see how the pictures are getting verified, and to see which have been outed as fakes.
