‘Creativity Comes From Without, Not Within’

“Our creativity comes from without, not from within. We are not self-made. We are dependent on one another, and admitting this to ourselves isn’t an embrace of mediocrity and derivativeness. It’s a liberation from our misconceptions, and it’s an incentive to not expect so much from ourselves and to simply begin.” — Kirby Ferguson

Getting started is the most important thing, and we find ways to avoid it by over-thinking and trying too hard to be original. It feels like a lack of energy, but that lack of energy comes from the expectation that we need to pull something amazing out of nowhere. As Kirby notes in his TED talk, we need to embrace the remix. Nothing is new. We just have our own versions that we share with the rest of the world.
