Give Siri A Quick Command By Holding Your iPhone To Your Ear

Perhaps you've seen the the jailbreak hack that allows you to use Siri hands-free but haven't wanted to jailbreak your device. Lucky for you, there's a built-in feature that'll let you use Siri without the need to press and hold the home button. To set it up, just follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the General tab.
  3. Tap the Siri tab.
  4. Toggle the "Raise to Speak" option to the "ON" position.

Now anytime you raise your phone to your face to talk (and aren't in the middle of a phone call), Siri will activate and await your command. This is, of course, only useful if you're not using a headset.

Whilst activating 'raise to speak' is convenient for quickly assessing Siri, users may want to consider whether the convenience is worth the additional drain on their battery.

The raise to speak feature utilises the iPhones infrared proximity sensor. As such having the 'raise to speak' setting active means the infrared sensor is continually running whilst ever the phone is unlocked (so it can detect when it's placed next to your head). With raise to speak deactivated however, the infrared sensor is only active once you have initiated a phone call (at least it's supposed to only be active during a call. There are some YouTube clips that suggest the sensor might even stay active after Siri is disabled).
