Firefox 9 Available, Speeds Up JavaScript


The latest version of Firefox is available for download, bringing some speed increases, better integration with OS X for Mac users, and lots of stability improvements.

You won’t see it on the official Mozilla page yet, but the download is up and ready to go ahead of tomorrow’s official release. This new version includes:

  • Added Type Inference, significantly improving JavaScript performance
  • Improved theme integration for Mac OS X Lion
  • Added two finger swipe navigation for Mac OS X Lion
  • Added support for querying Do Not Track status via JavaScript
  • Added support for font-stretch
  • Improved support for text-overflow
  • Improved standards support for HTML5, MathML, and CSS
  • Fixed several stability issues

ExtremeTech is reporting 20 to 30 per cent increases in speed compared to Firefox 8, due to the new type interference feature in its JavaScript engine. For the full list of changes, check out Mozilla’s full changelog. Hit the links below to download the new version.
