Splitwise Calculator Tells You How Much To Chip In For Crashing On The Couch

Splitwise, the folks behind previously mentioned bill-splitting web app Split The Rent (now also called Splitwise) have unveiled a guest calculator to help you figure out how much you should chip into the household pot to say thank you if you’ve been crashing on the couch for a few days or weeks.

The web app uses a pretty simple algorithm to do the maths: supply the apartment’s total rent, how often the actual residents pay the rent, how many nights you’re staying, and how many people normally live in the apartment, and you’ll get a suggested number that would cover your “rent” for the time you’re crashing there.

The Splitwise Guest Calculator is meant as a guideline if you want to say thanks to a friend for letting you sleep on their couch or in their guest room, or for you to come up with a fair amount to ask a long-term houseguest to chip in to the household expenses. Asking a houseguest to chip in for the bills and groceries is a tricky proposition, no matter what tool you use. How do you approach a guest who’s stayed long enough that they should probably help with the expenses? How much do you ask for? Share your tips in the comments.
