Relieve Bug Bites With Vick's Vapo Rub

When the weather warms up, it'll bring one of the year's most annoying problems: bug bites. If you do fall victim to a bee sting or mosquito bite, you can easily relieve the itching and redness with the help of Vick's Vapo Rub.This tip comes from The People's Pharmacy:

For more years than I can remember, I've had an allergy to mosquito bites. Now I don't suffer long. With a touch of Vicks the itching and redness are gone.

It seems to work for the same reasons as toothpaste since both use menthol for relief, but Vick's has the distinct advantage of being made for skin application and won't show as a white splotch.

Wow, this is quite surprising. Am I the only one who assumed it would make it worse?

I've heard that applying nail polish and other barriers to mozzy bites also help in easing the pain. I can only assume that Vicks (being a thick ointment) fills acts in a similar fashion, and aids in depriving oxygen to the bite.

In having said that, I've always been of the understanding the pain associated from a mozzy bite isn't from the bite as much itself, and is a reaction to the anti-coagulant injected during the bite - so what role oxygen plays in that I don't know.

The best thing for mosquito bites is Tiger Balm. Takes the itch out completely.
