One key strategy for protecting yourself from the ill effects of a toxic workplace is to develop a strong program for personal renewal outside of work. Exercise, spending time with friends, meditating or quiet time, enjoying hobbies — these are things everyone needs; for people who have to face psychologically draining situations on a daily basis, it’s even more critical.

PsychCentral also recommends scheduling daily debriefings or “reality checks” to remind yourself of your strengths. Make a list or a self-esteem file with your accomplishments to bolster yourself as needed throughout the day.

Other suggestions offered for dealing with a toxic work environment include building a support network outside of work and, obviously, getting out of the situation if it becomes intolerable. See the full article for more advice or share your thoughts with us in the comments.
