BlackBerry Protect Offers Remote Wipe And Online Backup

BlackBerry has always offered a pretty comprehensive range of backup and remote wipe features, but some of those options haven’t been easily available to individual users who aren’t connected to a corporate BlackBerry server. The BlackBerry Protect app, which has just been made available to Australian customers, changes that, making it easy to locate (or erase) a lost or stolen BlackBerry device.

Once the app is installed, you can set it up to automatically backup your contacts, text messages, bookmarks and calendars wirelessly on a schedule of your choosing. If you misplace the phone, you can lock or wipe it remotely via the BlackBerry Protect site, and then restore your backed-up data to another device. You can also use the site to locate the phone or display a message on its screen beseeching any good Samaritan who finds it to contact you.

BlackBerry Protect is a free download from BlackBerry App World. The app is currently in beta, but even so it’s an obvious essential for any BlackBerry owner.
