Attach A File Folder To The Side Of Your Desk To Reduce Clutter

Your desk can often become a home for the large amount of paper you encounter in a regular workday, and cleanup becomes overwhelming when everything is covering your workspace. Attaching a folder or hanging file to the side of your desk, however, can make for a convenient inbox that you can sort once a day and keep the clutter off of your desk.

Work and tech blog Unplggd suggests adhering a hanging file to the side of your desk. While this is definitely the more elegant solution, you can do the same thing with some masking tape and a regular folder you have lying around. If your incoming paper load isn’t ridiculous, you can probably get away with simply taping the folder to the side of your desk. If you have a lot of paper, what you can do to accommodate more in the folder is open the folder slightly and put tape around the sides to prevent paper from falling out. Basically, you’re filling in the blank parts of the sides to allow the folder to stay slightly open and accommodate more stuff. You’ll probably want to put tape on both the insides and outsides of the folder, too, to make the edges thicker and not sticky.

If you’re like me and don’t have a desk with sides (meaning your desk is basically a large table), you can use the wall instead. I keep my hanging filer on the wall to the right of my desk. As one more alternative, you can simply tape it to the side edge of the table as well.
