Optus’s plan to offer free live streaming to mobile phones from the 2010 World Cup for its customers obviously gave it some ideas. It will also offer a free live stream of Channel Seven’s live coverage of the Australian Open tennis next month.

The broadcasts, which run from January 18-31, will be accessible to any Optus customers using a 3G phone, including the iPhone. The time zone match-up makes this more appealing than the World Cup in some ways, though on occasion Seven itself will be delaying match transmission to maximise TV ratings.
