Distraction-Free Writing In Google Docs; No Add-Ons Necessary

12:30AM October 13, 2009 | Jason Fitzpatrick

We’ve highlighted a variety of ways to create a distraction-free writing environment including altering Microsoft Word and running portable applications. This is much easier: open a Google Docs template and set your browser fullscreen.

Over at Digital Inspiration they’ve created a simple Google Docs template that emulates the green-on-black minimalism of early word processors. All you need to do is visit the link below to open the template in Google Docs, hit CTRL+SHIFT+F (to “Fullscreen” Google Docs), and then hit F11 (Fullscreens most web browsers). Two keyboard shortcuts and you’ve got a distraction-free writing space.

If you’re curious to see the coding magic that turns Google Docs into a green-screen terminal, check out the link below to Digital Inspiration. They have a detailed explanation of how they created the template and include instructions on how to alter the template colour scheme to anything you want.

Have your own tool or trick for distraction-free writing? Let’s hear about it in the comments.
