StayInvisble Catalogues Free Proxy Servers To Keep You Anonymous

Looking to add a little more stealth and a little less “Here I am, world!” to your web browsing? StayInvisible not only catalogues free proxy servers but provides tools to test proxies and information about anonymity and encryption.

Many resources that provide proxy lists provide little else. StayInvisible has lists of proxy servers as well as online tools for testing just how anonymous your connection is: proxy checkers, IP verifiers and email testers. In addition to the proxy tools they also have a proxy encyclopaedia to help you decipher the various terms used, and basic text encryption tool.

Have a favourite proxy site or program? Sound off in the comments.

Any thoughts on the benefits/downfalls of Ultrasurf? It seems decent although the Firefox add-on doesn't seem to work.

@rjulie: Second that. Tor is the best way to go for anonymous net connections, as long as you've got it set up correctly (like preventing Javascript/Flash, web active toolbars, cookies, and even poorly formed links from disclosing your true identity). Freenet is an alternative fully anonymous web, but it doesn't provide access to the World Wide Web. For mild anonymity, just using Privoxy can carry you a long way. That doesn't give you true anonymity like Tor does, but it can prevent your browser from leaking a lot of extra details about you, not to mention effectively block ads.

Look I live in the UAE, where censorship is regulated by the government. I can't access any pages which promote anti-censorship methods. can anyone post the proxylist to pastebin and PM the link for me? Please?!?

Have any of you heard of a product called Hot spot Shield? I am using it now but I wonder how effective it is.

@1112: Yeah, I find that FoxyProxy + SSH tunneling is the best of both worlds. You can forward traffic selectively, AND you get the benefits of encryption.

Also, in case you weren't aware, you don't even have to explicitly run a proxy to tunnel SSH traffic. With Plink or Putty You can run something like this:

    plink -N -D [PORT] [USERNAME]@[HOSTNAME]

    Where:
[PORT] is the listen port you want to use locally
[USERNAME] is your username on the machine running your SSH server
[HOSTNAME] is the domain name or IP of the machine running your SSH server

This will create a SOCKS5 proxy locally which will listen on the port specified by[PORT]. Any requests passed through this proxy will be encrypted.

Doesn't your ISP keep a log of where you go (like to that proxy)? And the proxy site keeps a log of where you go so...

@JLobo: Depends what the threat is. Data goes unencrypted to a proxy server while typically VPN connections are encrypted. So, if you're worried about privacy / security on the local end (Wifi hotspot, secrectly browsing at work) VPN is what you want. But VPNs typically forward ALL traffic, making for a slow browsing experience and may break network drives without additional configuration.

Proxies are good because it's easier to configure per program, so it's good if you just want to hide your IP on a web forum. And it might be enough to bypass some NAT web logging schemes.

For wifi hotspot privacy I run a proxy at home, and forward it over an SSH connection, making a pseudo VPN.

Hmm... site is blocked by OfficeScan for "malicious content".

  • Chewmieser

Wow, didn't know they were even still around! I used them years back when I cared about my privacy...

I set up a VPN with itshidden.com that seems to work well. A lot of the Web pages are in Dutch, which is cool. I was testing a hosting company when I switched VPN on, and they thought I was some kind of spam operation because of the different IP. I dropped their service, so I didn't bother with the photo ID and signed PayPal approval they wanted.

Is it better to go through proxy or vpn? Is one better than the other?

Sorry, Privax is not what I was thinking of, it was [e-pr0xy.com] that kept the up-to-date list of open proxies. As a security guy, I catalog a lot of these tools and managed to get confused. My apologies.

  • ax0n

I've also had good luck with the proxy list at [www.privax.us]

Not to toot my own horn too much, but I wrote a five-part series on web filter evasion and it's quite relevant to the content, so hopefully readers will find it very helpful - [www.h-i-r.net]

Great post. I was looking for some reliable proxies to use for flagging ads on craigslist (the ones in the autos section that are just finance scams, etc especially).

Are any of these proxies outside of the U.S. because there's a site that blocks U.S. addresses, but it's the only link for a movie I want to see. (Salloumi is the site). I've tried some outside the U.S. proxies and they won't load the site properly.

I love when Proxy servers use the word "proxy" in the URL and IT Security takes them all out with one rule.
