Opera For Wii Now Available For Free

If you thought the idea of having Opera on your Wii was a novel one but not if it cost you money, you’re in luck. Nintendo has dropped the point requirement for the browser.

If you never bought it you can now hop into the Wii Shopping Channel and grab a copy of it. If you did spent points on it, don’t be too upset. According to gaming site ElectricPig, Nintendo will be offering free virtual game console downloads worth up to 500 points for those early adopters.

We actually discovered this yesterday when we turned on the wii to play The Simpsons Game. There was a wii mail from nintendo and it mentioned the free game if you had already purchased. We hadn’t so we went ahead and downloaded the internet channel for free and then spent 30 mins watching youtube videos and some flash cartoons. Was loads of fun!

@WoodyInNY: I didn't update and I got it just fine. 4.0 for me, used bannerbomb. Didn't get prompted to upgrade when I got the channel.

@Chris Raimondi: The better question is, do you have to update to the latest system software to use the "credit" if you bought it. If so, many hacked Wii users will skip the $5 "rebate" to avoid doing the update.

Oh yeah, they also upgraded the browser's Flash to Flash lite 3.1 (Equal to Flash 8) Better then nothing I guess... still I miss using Veoh on my Wii.... or any other video service that isn't Youtube ;_;.

I made the mistake of paying the 500 points for it. It's so useless on the Wii that free is probably too much money.

Nice to see they're offering a consolation prize. Now if only there was a virtual game console download that was of any interest whatsoever.

I got the browser back when it was free... before they started charging for it... before it became free.

Like another commenter said.. I've used it about three times.

I use this for a really easy way to watch YouTube videos on a bigger TV with friends. Pop youtube.com/tv into the address bar and you'll have a YouTube interface made for the TV that works great!

Is this an updated version of the Opera browser, or the same one that I paid for a few months ago?

it'd be nice if there was a newer version of the flash player included as well...

If you hacked your Wii you can download the .wad for the Internet Channel already.

I got this for free for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. It's worth the money, providing it's free, but otherwise? EEeeh.
